Republican Rep. Jeff Van Drew conceded in the race for New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District, according to NBC10’s newsgathering partner KYW Newsradio.
Van Drew announced late Tuesday night that he called Democratic challenger and Cape May Mayor Zack Mullock and conceded his victory, KYW Newsradio reported.
Despite this, the race remains too close for NBC News to call.
Mullock is the mayor of Cape May and says he entered the race because he felt compelled to serve South Jersey residents.
Van Drew sat atop the 2nd District since 2019. Elected as a Democrat, Van Drew famously switched parties to become a Republican before he was reelected in 2020.
On his campaign website, Mullock said he wants to ensure South Jersey residents are represented by someone born and raised in the community.
“Washington is too often driven by corruption, special interests, and profiteering that leave working families squeezed and unheard,” Mullock said on his website.
Mullock’s campaign focused on issues such as affordability, access to healthcare, responsible energy policy, and protecting the environment.
