Longtime Ransburg YMCA on Indianapolis east side is for sale

INDIANAPOLIS — The long-standing Ransburg YMCA on the east side of Indianapolis is up for sale after 67 years of serving the community.

The property is listed for $3.25 million.

Questions remain about what happens next and what the sale could mean for the community.

“It was a beacon for our community on the east side,” said Vanessa Stiles, a former YMCA volunteer and board member for 14 years. “It’s been devastating since it’s been gone, and we’ve been trying to fill the void.”

The YMCA permanently closed in March because of financial challenges. Stiles said the closure left a hole in the community. She said families, older adults, children and teens lost a community center, a food pantry, an early learning center and a fitness facility. “We were a community; we were family,” Stiles said. “The saying was you could belong anywhere, but at Ransburg we’re family.”

Premier Commercial Real Estate Services is helping the YMCA sell the nearly 54,000-square-foot building and 8.9-acre campus at 501 N. Shortridge Road. That’s southeast of the intersection of 10th Street and North Shortridge Road.

“The facility has two basketball courts, an indoor pool, an outdoor pool, multiple offices, and classrooms,” said Melissa Blackwell, assistant vice president at Premier Commercial.

The YMCA shared a statement.

“We remain open to a range of possibilities and hope the property’s next use will be a positive addition to the community.”

Stiles is worried that the price might be too high for some organizations. “The Y has made it clear they don’t want to be a part of the east side of Indianapolis anymore. I accept that. But what I’m hoping is that that building doesn’t stay vacant. There are opportunities.”

Premier Commercial says it has interested parties and hopes to sell to a nonprofit or a community center. “We’re still taking offers,” Blackwell said. “We have submitted potential buyers to the YMCA, and their committee is reviewing those, and they will get back to them, and we’re still showing the property.”

She added that the YMCA does not have a specific sale deadline.
