Democrat Vikki Goodwin has won the race for Texas lieutenant governor, defeating incumbent Republican Dan Patrick, according to The Associated Press race call.
Patrick has held the office since 2015. Goodwin, a state representative, challenged him in the November election.
Although the lieutenant governor is next in line to the governor, the office also holds significant power over the Texas Senate. The lieutenant governor presides over the chamber, influences committee assignments and plays a central role in determining which legislation advances.
The winner will begin a four-year term in January 2027.
